We are obsessed with vision journals. We are using ours to plan and kick our life and business goals. We want to share a few reasons why we think you should create a vision journal, like we have.
Cast your mind back a few years to when The Secret was released and everyone went cray cray for it. It seemed everyone was on the manifestation train, including Oprah. Vision boards were HUGE. Of course, it wasn’t long before someone thought of a way to turn them digital. Then platforms such as Pinterest and Instagram became popular online spaces to seek and record inspiration for our dreams.
Over the past few years using a pen and paper has fast become a lost art form. However, there are some of us who are resisting the transition to becoming a completely paperless society. Yep, we are secretly rejoicing in the knowledge there is a growing tribe of people who prefer to do some things away from a computer or phone. It was only a matter of time before the traditional way to create a vision board made a come back. And now they have. Big time.
And, in a very freaking exciting development, we discovered people are now creating VISION JOURNALS. These are like vision boards but a million times better. If you’ve never heard of a vision journal, then read on. Even if you have heard of them, read on anyway. Because if you are stationery and planning fanatics like us we know you’ll be as excited about them as we are.
Right. Here are the basics you need to know if you want to create a vision journal:
What is a vision journal?
A vision journal is a tool used to incite you to take action to reach your goals. You can use it like a traditional journal and write in it, or you can fill the pages with sketchnotes, art, or personal photos. You can also create a collage of images, words, or affirmations. So, like on a vision board, you cut the words and images out of magazines and use glue to stick them down. You can also add your own photos and artwork. However, using a journal instead of a board gives you a few added benefits. For example:
- A journal doesn’t have to be on display for everyone to see like a board is.
- You can keep adding to your journal as your vision evolves.
- The layout of a journal means you can also add writing if you like.
- You can create spreads on different goals and themes. They can be relevant to what you have your focus on at any given time.
- You can look back through your journal to see how you have progressed.
How does a vision journal work?
The spreads you create are a representation and reminder of your dreams. Now, because the mind responds to visual stimulation, the imagery evokes an emotional response in you. It helps you to define your dreams and inspires you to take action to reach your goals.
Why should you create a vision journal?
We are glad you asked. A vision journal is a fun and extremely powerful tool to use to plan and document your life and business journey. Here are 5 reasons why you should create a vision journal:
1) They are a therapeutic and creative outlet.
For stationery freaks like us, there is nothing better than having a valid excuse to play with paper, scissors, glue and pens. When you create a vision journal, it can be as simple as sticking a few images and words on a board, or as elaborate as using feathers, beads, and stencils to create the look you want.
Immersing yourself in a project such as this, even if it is only once or twice a week, helps you to relax and stills your mind. Additionally, working with imagery and wording that resonates with you will leave you in a positive mindset. So, it is a perfect way to spend a few hours relaxing and getting your creative freak on.
Lynda swears by working in her journal as a way to calm down if she’s feeling anxious.
2) They make you aware of what you are truly seeking.
Rather than just saying, “I want a to buy a house”, you are consciously seeking photos of what your perfect house will look like. You visualise yourself living there. You imagine how you are going to feel when you do.
Or, if you want to travel, you select pictures of destinations you want to visit, planting the first seeds of your holiday in your brain. And because your brain reacts to visuals, every time you look at your journal you water the seeds a little.
Consciously thinking about words that have significance to you, and seeking out photos that represent where you want to go in life, means you have made a decision to invite your dreams from your subconscious into your reality.
3) They give you direction.
Just like a good ol’ goal setting session, creating a vision journal will give you clarity. This is because the process makes you stop and think about what you want to achieve, why you want it, and how you are going to get it.
You can create different spreads for all areas of life, such as home, relationships, work, travel, passions… anything you want. Then, you will always know what you are moving towards and you’ll subconsciously search for ways to get yourself there.

4) Opportunities will present themselves here, there, and everywhere.
Now, we don’t want to get all woo woo on you (unless you are into woo woo, then we are going to woo woo all over you), but this one has been freaking us out lately.
You see, we spoke a few weeks ago about podcasts and how it is a dream for both of us to host one in the future. So, we put it as a goal in our vision journals. And, we swear, since then we have been seeing opportunities for podcast appearances and host training everywhere. To be honest, we wouldn’t be surprised if we get a phone call from Jenna Kutcher any day now, asking us to be on her podcast.
Of course, the opportunities were probably always there, but we had just never noticed them before. By putting podcasts in our journals and seeing a reminder of them everyday, they are now on our radar.
Now, excuse us while we run to make a new vision journal full of Tom Hardy photos.
5) They make you feel all the feels.
The best thing about vision journals is how they make you feel. This is why it is important to make sure you select words and images to place on your journal that evoke particular feelings and emotions for you.
For example, our dream is to make our business successful. Jenna Kutcher is our role model for the level of success we’d like to achieve one day. We follow Jenna’s blog, and her social media pages, and we are part of her online community for her Goal Digger podcast. We are personally invested in her journey, and when we listen to her podcast we feel energised and inspired to go after our business goals. So, when we see a photo of Jenna in our journals, we remember the way she makes us feel. And it inspires us to keep working on building our mini empire, like she has.
